Designed for:
University of Missouri-Rolla
Civil Engineering Department
Nature of business:
Education in civil engineering
Concept of design:
Because the field of civil engineering is so broad, it was
decided the best icon to represent the profession would
be a hardhat. Civil engineers deal with "people"
so the letters "I" in the word were changed to
refelct men and women wearing hardhats. Thus, this also
represents the profession is open to both men and women.
The letterforms are connected with curved lines that represent
"hands" because civil engineers bring the world
together with their products (roads, bridges, airports).
The UMR logo was added above the "V" to tie the
logo back to the the university. Colors were based on UMR's
standard marketing colors for the School of Engineering.
